In a recent newsletter, I talked about the mystery of music’s enduring appeal to humans across space and time (click here to read “Unraveling The Mystery Of Music”).
I also introduced Neurotrophia, a new project from Brainjo Studios to create music that amplifies its various beneficial effects on brain activity. We’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to utilizing music for its brain benefits, so this is an area of great interest and promise.
Listener Lew sent us an excellent follow up question, asking about what kinds of music was most stimulating to the brain...
Instrumental music? Music with vocals? Classical? Jazz? Pop?
It’s an excellent question, and in this episode we talk through a framework for determining the kind of music that might be most stimulating for your brain.

Hi Josh and Tommy
I am fascinated and slightly addicted to your podcast, specifically all discussions about the connections between learning music and neuroplasticity. I have been playing guitar for many years and would definitely like to dig deeper and learn more, particularly as I am 62 now and am interested in keeping my brain fit and healthy for as long as possible. My question is - is the acquiring of motor skills when learning an instrument more or less important than learning music theory or are they equally important in terms of brain fitness?
Thanks for a great podcast!!
