What kind of dancing is good for the brain?
On the last episode of the Better Brain Fitness podcast, we fielded a question from listener Jen in San Diego.
One of Jen’s favorite ways to challenge her brain is with what she calls “open-style dance.” The kind of dancing you do when you just put on some music and move to it any way you please (side note: when was the last time you did such a thing?).
Jen’s perception was that this kind of free form dance would be less cognitively stimulating than a more structured dance practice. And, if that perception is true, what sorts of things might she do to compensate?
I love this question. It opens the door to so many important conversations, including why maintaining a youthful way of seeing the world is key to maintaining a youthful brain.
